Transform Your Phone into a Studio

video preview

 Aloha Reader!

I got a cool one that can simplify your content creating process. I'm gonna show you how to create hight quality content with two phones. I know, you may be thinking two... gimme a 84 seconds to explain. 😇

Have you ever wondered how to shoot professional-looking product videos without breaking the bank? Here's a simple setup that'll have you creating multi-angle content using gear you probably already own.

The Magic is in the App

The secret sauce here is the Blackmagic Camera App (completely free!). This app works on both iOS and Android devices and lets you:

  • Control multiple phones simultaneously
  • Switch between camera angles with a simple tap
  • Record both angles at the same time to an iPad or tablet
  • Keep individual recordings on each phone for later editing

Your Shopping List

Essential gear:

  • Two smartphones (any recent iPhone or Android, any recent model works)
  • Tablet or iPad for monitoring
  • Cheap mobile tripod, like the Ulanzi MT73 or Ulanzi TT88
  • Phone mount with MagSafe ($10-50)

Don't have two phones? Borrow one from family or friends for the 20-30 minutes you'll need. The Blackmagic Camera app is completely free and works across platforms—no subscription, no hidden costs.

Audio upgrade:

  • DJI Mic 2 (or cheaper alternatives under $100)

Lighting setup:

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Mount your overhead camera: Position one phone directly above your product using a magnetic mount or tripod arm
  2. Set up your face cam: Place the second phone on a tripod at eye level for reaction shots
  3. Connect everything: Open the Blackmagic Camera app on both phones and sync them to your tablet for monitoring
  4. Light it right: Use your main light with a grid for your face, add the small panel overhead to eliminate shadows
  5. Audio matters: Clip one wireless mic to yourself, attach the other to your overhead setup
  6. Hit record: The app records to both phones individually while giving you live switching on the tablet

Pro Tips

  • Shoot during the day near windows for free fill lighting
  • The grid on your main light prevents overexposure in the background
  • You can edit with the synced tablet footage or use the individual phone recordings for higher quality

Budget breakdown: Beyond the phones you already own, you're looking at under $300 for a complete multi-camera setup that rivals much more expensive gear. You can also get creative and use household items to make your shooting rig. Bring on the duct tape.

One-camera alternative: Don't have two phones? No problem. First, shoot your product shots. Then, record your talking head segments separately and sync them in editing.

The beauty of this setup is its simplicity. It offers professional results without the professional price tag.
